Does mesh actually stop anything?
It stops flying insects landing on the food, which is the entire job. It is not a lid and it isn't pretending to be, so it's worth being clear about where it helps and where it doesn't.

Set it down so the hem sits flat all the way round — a raised corner is an open door, and that's the bit everyone gets wrong. On grass or a cloth, weigh the edge with a couple of forks. Shake crumbs off after use and it wipes clean with a damp cloth; hand wash and air dry if something spills on it.

Because the tension is in the hem rather than in a rigid skeleton, the edge presses itself down against the table surface rather than bridging over the bumps in a tablecloth — which is exactly what closes off the gap insects use. The mesh is fine enough to stop a fruit fly and open enough that a warm dish underneath keeps venting steam instead of going soggy.

- 33 × 33 cm — the indoor one. It goes over the fruit bowl in summer, over a cooling loaf, or over a plate you've left out for someone getting home late. Small enough that it doesn't look like camping equipment on the kitchen bench.
- 43 × 43 cm — the default. Clears a full platter, a cake stand or a large salad bowl with room around the base for the hem to sit flat. If you're only buying one, buy this one.
