Black or White?

This is a large object that lives permanently on your bench, so the colour matters more than it would on a gadget you put away. Pick the one that reads as part of the kitchen rather than as a thing parked next to the sink.

White	Pale benchtops, white cabinetry, a small kitchen where a big dark rack would visually eat the corner. Lighter and less imposing in a galley kitchen where the drainer is right in your eyeline.

Where does all that water actually go?

Two tiers means twice the drips, and gravity does not care about your benchtop. Everything drains down through the levels and out, so the one decision that determines whether you love this or resent it is which way you point the drainage and what is underneath it.

A flat, level bench directly beside the sink, angled so runoff goes toward the bowl. Stone, quartz, laminate and sealed timber counters. A stainless draining board. A laundry trough surround.	Unsealed timber, or any surface that stains from standing water. A bench that slopes away from the sink. Against a plasterboard wall with no splashback. Directly beside a toaster or a power point.

Setup, in order: assemble on the floor, set it in place empty, pour a cup of water over the top tier and watch where it goes, then adjust the angle before you load a single plate. The step almost everyone skips is that water test. People discover the direction of flow three days later via a warped patch of bench. Thirty seconds now saves that. Wipe the frame dry once a week and lift the whole unit when you wipe the counter.

The dishes go up, and your only clear stretch of bench comes back.

A flat drainer holds one load and then gives up. You wash a roasting dish and there is nowhere for it, so it goes on a tea towel on the bench. Then the chopping board leans against the splashback, the mugs go upside down in a row along the edge, the cutlery sits in a pile going rusty, and by the end of dinner the entire counter beside the sink is a drying zone you have to work around. Going up rather than out fixes this. The same footprint holds roughly double, because the second tier is using air you were already wasting.

Why most drainers rust, and what to look for instead

The classic failure is a chrome-plated wire rack. It looks fine for six months, then the plating fractures at a weld or a bend — always at a joint, always where water sits — and rust creeps out from underneath. Once it starts you cannot stop it, and worse, it transfers. You get orange marks on the bench under the feet and rust flecks on the base of your clean pans, which means you are rewashing dishes that were already washed.

What you want is a rack where the wet parts are not bare plated steel, and where the water is directed out rather than left to pool in a tray. Two tiers helps here as well: the upper level drips onto the lower level and then straight out, rather than every item sitting in the same shallow puddle of everyone else's water. Faster drying means less spotting on glassware and no stale-dishcloth smell.

Black — the harder-wearing look. It sits well against dark stone, stainless sinks and black tapware, and reads as fitted kitchen hardware. The practical advantage is that limescale and water marks are far less visible day to day, which matters on something you never put away.
White — lighter and less dominant, which counts for a lot in a small or galley kitchen where the drainer is at eye level in your peripheral vision constantly. Best against white or pale cabinetry, where black would draw the eye to the sink corner rather than away from it.
