Three sizes — which one am I actually buying?

Two of these are 200 cm long and differ only in width, which is the measurement that decides whether one person or two can be under it. Pick by who's using it, not by the bed's label.

Choose	If this sounds like you
150 × 200 cm	One person, full length. The sofa blanket you keep on the arm of the chair, or a top layer on a single bed. Folds down small enough to live in the room rather than in a cupboard.
180 × 200 cm	Almost square, and much more generous side to side. Two people on a sofa, or a double bed where you want the blanket to reach the edges rather than sit as a strip down the middle.
200 × 230 cm	A Queen bed as a proper top layer with a drop at the sides, or a three-seater sofa covered end to end. The size to get if the blanket has to do a bit of everything.

If it's living in a shared room where two people reach for it, take the width. Length is rarely the thing anyone complains about.

Will the blue rose still be blue in two years?

Colour on a cotton blanket is lost to two things: heat and sunlight. Neither is about how often you wash it, which is the part most people have backwards.

The step people skip: dry it in shade rather than full sun. Line drying is better for the fabric than the dryer, but direct sun on a wet blue textile is the fastest way to bleach it — wet fibres fade far quicker than dry ones. Under an eave or on an indoor rail costs you an hour and keeps the colour.

Why cotton is the right fibre for a blanket that gets used daily

Synthetic throws win on the first touch and lose on the fiftieth. Polyester fleece traps body oils that a cool wash won't shift, so within a few months it starts to feel slightly slick, then it pills where it rubs against clothing. It also doesn't breathe, which is why you get too warm under a cheap throw before you get comfortable.

Cotton behaves the other way round. It's marginally less soft on day one and considerably softer by month six, because each wash relaxes the fibres rather than degrading them. It breathes, so it's usable in spring as well as January. And it takes a hot-water wash if something gets spilled on it, which fleece really doesn't. On a blanket that lives on a sofa in a house with people in it, that combination is the whole argument.
