Reversible quilts and the washing question

A quilt is two printed faces stitched around a filling, so the risk is the stitching and the shape, not the colour. Wash it the way you would wash anything with a filling and it stays flat.

The step people skip: shaking it out before it dries. Filling settles into whatever position it dried in, and a quilt dried in a lump keeps a lump.

The thing that separates a quilt from a printed bedspread is the stitching that runs through both faces and the filling between them. Those lines are structural. They stop the filling migrating into the corners, they keep the loft even across the whole surface, and they are the reason the quilt falls in soft parallel folds over the edge of a mattress instead of bunching into one lump at the foot of the bed.

Both faces are finished, which sounds obvious and often is not — plenty of "reversible" bedding has a good side and a side that is clearly the back.
