Which size, and who is going to be under it?

Getting the size wrong is the only real way to be disappointed by this one — the colour is taste, the size is arithmetic. Work out whether it is a personal blanket or a shared one before you pick.

Choose If this sounds like you
100 × 150 cm A lap blanket for a reading chair or a cold desk, or a child's bed. It stays on the person rather than trailing on the floor behind the armchair.
150 × 200 cm One adult, fully covered, feet included. The standard sofa throw and the size most people mean when they say they want a blanket.
200 × 230 cm Two of you on one sofa, or a top layer that actually covers a double or queen bed rather than sitting across it like a runner.

The soft one always gets claimed. A second in a different colour is cheaper than the ongoing negotiation.

How do I stop it going flat and bobbly?

Everything that ruins a soft throw is a heat or a friction problem, and both are avoidable.

    Works Avoid
Cold gentle machine wash, washed on its own with room to move in the drum. Lowest tumble setting or line dry, then a hard shake out. Hot water and hot drying, which permanently flatten pile. Washing it with towels or denim — lint and abrasion are what cause bobbling, not age.

Shake it out properly when it comes off the line and the surface lifts straight back up. Wash it alone for the first cycle or two, since new pile releases a little fluff and it will find everything else in the load. The step people skip: leaving out the fabric softener. It is the obvious instinct with a soft blanket and it is the one thing guaranteed to ruin it — softener coats the fibres, drags the pile down, and within a few washes the surface is slick instead of plush.

Store it folded in a basket rather than compressed at the bottom of a cupboard.

The blanket that ends the discussion about who gets the good one.

The nightly ritual in most living rooms involves someone getting up for a drink and returning to find the soft blanket has changed owners. There is always exactly one good one, and it is good because of surface, not warmth — nobody fights over the scratchy wool throw that is technically warmer. What people actually want is the thing you put your face against without thinking about it. That is what this is: a deep, even, marshmallow-soft pile with no pattern to complicate it and nothing about it that discourages daily use.

Marshmallow Comfort Throw Blanket folded surface detail

A plain blanket has nowhere to hide, so the pile has to be right

Patterned throws can get away with an average surface, because your eye is busy with the design. A single-colour blanket cannot. Every inconsistency in the pile shows as a shadow, every thin patch reads as a mark, and any unevenness in the depth is visible from the doorway. That is why the plain soft throw is the harder thing to make well and the easier thing to get wrong. What you are looking for is depth that is uniform across the whole face, a pile that springs back after being sat on rather than staying crushed, and a surface that stays matte instead of going shiny at the fold lines. Get those right and the blanket looks the same in year two as in week one. Get them wrong and you get the familiar arc: lovely for a month, then flat, then bobbled, then relegated to the car boot. The other quiet advantage of plain is that it goes with anything. A patterned throw commits you; a single deep colour lets the blanket move from the sofa to a bed to a spare room without ever looking wrong.

    Choosing a colour

    • Ivory White and Grey — the neutrals. Ivory White softens a dark sofa and reads warm rather than stark; Grey is the one that goes with everything and shows daily use the least. Pick these if the blanket needs to work in whatever room it ends up in.
    • Blush Pink and Passion Purple — the soft and the saturated end of the same family. Blush Pink is a warm neutral from a distance and only reads pink close up; Passion Purple is a proper colour and will be the thing your eye goes to in the room.
    • Green and Sunshine Yellow — the two that change a room's mood. Green sits naturally with wood, rattan and plants; Sunshine Yellow is the brightest of the set and the one that lifts a grey winter living room more than any lamp will.
    • Coffee — deep warm brown. The most forgiving colour here for a household with pets or children, and the one that looks most at home against leather and dark timber.
