Is a cotton floral blanket the right layer for your bed?

There is one version of this blanket, so the question is not which to choose — it is whether cotton is what your bed is missing. Worth being honest about, because cotton behaves very differently from the fleece and sherpa throws most people already own.

Will the rose print fade, and will the cotton shrink?

Both are heat problems, and both are avoidable with one setting change. Cotton is the most washable material in the house right up until you put it through a hot cycle, at which point it becomes the most temperamental.

Cold wash on a normal cycle with a mild detergent, alongside other light colours.	Warm or hot washes, which shrink cotton and lift dye out of the rose print at the same time.
Tumble on low and take it out slightly damp, or dry it flat in shade.	Bleach, oxygen stain removers on the print, and drying it in direct sun for hours.

The gap in most bedrooms is the shoulder season. The winter duvet is too much from about March, but a bare sheet is not enough, so people compromise with a fleece throw pulled halfway up. Why cotton is the material that decides this

Cotton is absorbent in a way synthetics are not. Overnight, a body puts out a surprising amount of moisture, and the difference between a comfortable night and a clammy one is almost entirely whether the fabric touching you takes that moisture in and releases it, or holds it against your skin. Cotton takes it in. Polyester fleece pushes it back at you, which is the actual reason a fleece throw feels stifling even when the room is cool.

The second thing cotton does is get better. A synthetic throw is at its best the day it arrives and slowly pills, mats and goes slightly plasticky from there. Cotton softens with every wash — the fibres relax, the weave loosens fractionally, and after a couple of months it drapes rather than sits.
