Which of the three sizes?

The two bigger sizes are only twelve inches apart in width, and that gap is the whole decision. Gauze is light enough that going bigger costs you nothing in bulk, so think about coverage rather than tidiness.

Is cotton gauze going to be strong enough, or will it snag?

Gauze looks delicate and behaves better than it looks — but it does have one genuine weakness. Knowing what it is means you get years out of it rather than a season.

Frequent washing — gauze is designed to be laundered often and it gets softer every time.	Sharing a wash load with zips, hooks or buttons. An open weave is exactly what a zip pull catches.
Everyday bed and sofa use, being sat on, being dragged around by a small person.	Cats with claws and rough velcro. Same open weave, same problem.
Cold wash and a low tumble; it dries faster than any other blanket you own.	Fabric softener, which flattens the crinkle that makes gauze feel like gauze.

Do not iron it. That is the step people think they should do and it is the one that ruins the fabric — the puckered texture is the point, and pressing it flat turns a gauze blanket into an ordinary thin sheet.

The air pockets slow heat loss enough to feel like a blanket, while the openness of each layer lets moisture and body heat escape instead of building up. A single flat sheet has no such pockets, which is why it never quite feels warm no matter how many you stack.

The other thing the layered construction gives you is the crinkle. Gauze dries with a natural pucker, which means it never looks flat and never needs ironing, and it also means the fabric touches your skin at points rather than as a continuous sheet. That is a small thing that makes a big difference on a warm night. Wash it and it gets softer; the fibres relax and the weave opens fractionally more each time, so an old gauze blanket is a better one than a new one.
