Skip the fabric softener. That is the step people get backwards — softener coats cotton fibres and stops them absorbing, so the blanket feels slick rather than soft and stops breathing properly. Cotton softens on its own with each wash if you leave it alone.

Why cotton is the right fibre for a year-round blanket

Synthetic throws are warm in one direction only. They trap heat and they trap moisture with it, which is why you start out cosy and end up throwing it off at midnight. Cotton is breathable, so it holds warmth without holding humidity. That is the whole reason a cotton blanket works in March and in August, and a fleece one only works in January.

It also takes colour differently. Woven cotton holds pigment in the fibre rather than printing it on the surface, so a botanical pattern on cotton keeps its depth through washing instead of going chalky at the edges.
