How do I wash it without wrecking it?

Cold water and no softener — that's genuinely most of it. Cotton is the easiest fibre in the house to look after and the easiest to ruin with one enthusiastic hot cycle.

Hot washes, which is what actually shrinks cotton. Bleach on the sunburst colours. Fabric softener, which coats the fibres and flattens the texture. A full-heat tumble cycle.

Cold gentle wash on its own the first time, low tumble or line dry in shade, and pull it square while it's still slightly damp. Squaring it damp is the step everyone skips — a cotton blanket dried in a twisted heap keeps that shape, and no amount of folding straightens it out afterwards.

One layer that does winter under the duvet and summer on its own.

Bedding tends to be bought for extremes. There's a heavy duvet for January and a thin sheet for January's opposite, and for most of the year neither is right. Cotton solves it by being genuinely two-seasonal: on its own it's breathable enough to sleep under in warm weather, and laid over a duvet in winter it adds a layer of trapped air without adding weight on your chest. The radiating pattern this blanket takes its name from is worked into the cloth rather than printed onto it. That difference decides how it ages. A printed design sits on the surface and wears off along the fold lines and the top edge — the two places a blanket gets handled most. A woven pattern goes all the way through, so the sunburst is still there after a hundred washes because it isn't a coating, it's the construction.

It changes how the blanket behaves too. A woven texture holds small pockets of air across the whole surface, which is what makes cotton warmer than its weight suggests without becoming stifling. And it catches light in bands as it drapes, so a blanket in a single colour still has depth on a bed instead of reading as a flat rectangle. Cotton's other advantage is the boring one that matters most: it can take a proper wash. Sick children, spilled coffee, a dog with muddy paws — none of it is a crisis.

150 × 200 cm — reads as a throw on anything bigger than a single. On a single bed it covers properly with a short drop; on a sofa it's a full-length lap blanket for one.
200 × 230 cm — the workhorse. Covers a double or queen with enough overhang that it looks like bedding rather than a rug laid on top.
230 × 250 cm — the one that drapes. On a king it hangs low on both sides; on a queen it's a deliberately generous look, with the extra fabric pooling at the sides.
