Will cotton shrink or go stiff on me?

Cotton behaves predictably — it softens with use and it reacts to heat. Which means the entire care story is about keeping the temperature down and letting it dry on its own terms.

Most throws are winter objects. They come out in October, they get put away in April, and for half the year the sofa has nothing on it. There are two ways to get a design onto a blanket. You can print it on the surface, which is cheap and looks fine until the first wash starts lifting it, or you can build it into the weave with coloured threads. The second is what gives a cotton throw its depth: the pattern has a physical texture you can feel with a hand, the reverse carries the design as a negative of the front, and there is no printed layer to crack, fade unevenly or wear off at the fold lines. It also means the throw ages the way good cotton is supposed to — the weave relaxes, the surface softens, and the pattern stays exactly as strong as it was on day one because it is made of thread rather than ink.
