Which length, and does the colour matter?

Stand where you actually stand — at the sink, at the stove, at the desk — and look at how far you drift while you're there. That's the length you need. A mat you step off every time you reach for something isn't doing anything for your back.

Will a cushioned mat slide, or trip somebody?

The two things that make a floor mat dangerous are a curling edge and a floor that won't grip it — both are fixable before you ever stand on it. Check the surface first, and unroll the mat properly rather than dropping it and hoping.
