Which length, and does the colour matter?

Stand where you actually stand — at the sink, at the stove, at the desk — and look at how far you drift while you're there. That's the length you need. A mat you step off every time you reach for something isn't doing anything for your back.

Choose If this sounds like you
46 × 76 cm One spot, one person. In front of the sink, or under a standing desk where your feet stay roughly where you put them.
61 × 89 cm You shuffle. Sink to bench to sink, and you want to stay on the mat while you do it.
61 × 120 cm A galley kitchen, a long run of bench, or two people who both end up cooking in the same stretch of floor.

Grey hides splashes on a lighter floor; Brown hides them on a darker one. Pick against what you drop, not against the cabinets.

Will a cushioned mat slide, or trip somebody?

The two things that make a floor mat dangerous are a curling edge and a floor that won't grip it — both are fixable before you ever stand on it. Check the surface first, and unroll the mat properly rather than dropping it and hoping.

    Works on Avoid
Tile, vinyl, laminate and sealed timber kitchen floors Loose rugs and carpet, where the mat has nothing solid to sit against
A clean, dry floor — sweep and wipe before you first lay it down Laying it over grease or floor-polish residue, which is what actually causes sliding
Wiping spills off the top face as they happen Leaving it rolled up in a corner between uses, which sets a curl into the edges

The step people skip: lay it flat and leave it a day before judging it. A mat out of a box has roll memory, and the edges settle down on their own once it's been walked on.

The last twenty minutes of cooking stop being the part your back notices.

Standing still on tile is worse for you than walking on it. There's no give, so the same joints take the same load in the same position for as long as you're there — which is why washing up feels fine and roasting a full dinner leaves your lower back complaining. A cushioned mat gives the floor a little compliance, so your weight shifts and redistributes constantly in tiny amounts instead of parking in one place.

Cushioning only counts if it comes back up

Anything soft feels good for the first week. The question is whether it recovers. A cheap foam mat compresses under the two places you stand most — usually right in front of the sink — and stays compressed, so within a few months you have two dead flat patches and a mat that's only cushioned in the places you never use. Proper cushioning rebounds after each step, which is what keeps the support even across the whole mat over a long stretch. The other half of the job is the top surface: it has to shed the water, oil and flour that a kitchen floor inevitably collects, and wipe clean rather than absorb, or it turns into a sponge you're standing on.

    • Grey — the cooler neutral. Sits well against white, pale tile and stainless appliances, and hides splashes on a light floor.
    • Brown — the warmer one. Works with timber floors and darker cabinetry, and disguises marks that would show on grey.
    • 46 × 76 cm — the single-station size, for a sink or a standing desk.
    • 61 × 89 cm — the everyday kitchen size, with room to shift your feet without stepping off.
    • 61 × 120 cm — the long run, for galley kitchens and two-cook households.
