Which size, and does the colour matter?

Both sizes do the same job — the question is how much bench you have and whether you cook for two or for five. The colour is the silicone trim around the edge, so it's the only part of the board you'll actually see against your counter.

Choose If this sounds like you
36 × 23 cm An apartment kitchen where the only clear run of bench is beside the sink. Enough room for two onions and a bunch of herbs, and it still fits in the sink to rinse.
41 × 25 cm You cook for a household and you break down whole chickens. Room to push the chopped pile to one side and keep working instead of stopping to unload the board.
Green Warm kitchens — timber benchtops, cream cabinets, brass handles. The green softens the steel so it doesn't read as commercial.
Blue Grey or white stone benches and handleless cabinetry. Blue keeps it looking like equipment, which in a cool-toned kitchen is the right answer.

Two boards in different colours is the easiest way to keep raw meat and everything else genuinely separate.

Straight answer: will steel blunt my knives?

Faster than end-grain timber, yes. That's physics, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What you get in exchange is a surface that doesn't absorb anything, and that trade is worth making for some jobs and not others.

Use it for Reach for wood instead
Raw chicken, fish, and anything you want to bleach afterwards Long knife-heavy prep with a thin Japanese blade
Beetroot, turmeric, chilli — anything that stains a plastic board permanently Cleaver work and hard bone chopping
Resting and carving a roast — the juice pools in the channel Serving cheese at the table
Rolling and cutting dough, where a cold surface helps Anywhere the sound of a knife on steel will drive you mad

Practical version: keep this as the board that handles the messy, stainable, needs-a-proper-clean jobs, and keep your timber board for the rest. Wash it in hot soapy water or put it in the dishwasher, and dry it before you stack it — that's the step people skip, and trapped water under the silicone trim is the only way you'll get water marks on it.

The board you can actually disinfect after raw chicken.

Plastic boards get shredded. Every cut leaves a groove, the grooves go grey, and after six months you're chopping salad on a surface you'd rather not look at closely under a light. Wooden boards can't go in the dishwasher and warp if you leave them wet. This one is stainless steel: nothing soaks in, nothing stains, and a knife cut is a scratch on the surface rather than a trench that holds onto last week's garlic. When it's dirty you scrub it as hard as you like, or you put it in the dishwasher and forget about it.

Double-sided is the part that earns its keep

Both faces are the same steel, which means you can nominate one side raw and one side ready-to-eat and never have to wash the board mid-cook. Chicken on one face, flip, salad on the other, and the two never meet. It also doubles the working life of the surface — when one face has picked up enough scratches to look used, you turn it over and start again on a fresh one. Around the outside runs a moulded silicone frame. It does two jobs: it grips the bench so the board doesn't skate away when you're pushing down through a squash, and it lifts the steel a few millimetres clear of the counter so the whole thing sits still and quiet instead of ringing like a tray. A channel around the perimeter catches the juice off a resting roast before it runs onto the floor.

The sizes and the two colours

  • 36 × 23 cm — the everyday size. Fits on the drainer, fits in most sinks, fits in the gap between the hob and the wall. If your kitchen is short on bench, this is the one that will actually get used rather than left in the cupboard.
  • 41 × 25 cm — the one you want for real cooking. Big enough to carve on, big enough to lay out a whole tray's worth of vegetables at once, and wide enough that a cleaver doesn't feel like a risk to your knuckles.
  • Green — a soft sage-leaning green around the rim. Against timber, cream or beige cabinetry it reads as a piece of kitchenware rather than a piece of restaurant kit.
  • Blue — a clean cool blue. On a grey stone bench or in a white kitchen it's the sharper-looking choice, and it's the easier one to remember as the raw-meat board if you're buying two.

What You're Getting

  • One double-sided stainless steel chopping board in your chosen Colour and Size
  • Two usable steel faces — keep one for raw, one for everything else, no mid-cook washing
  • Moulded silicone frame that grips the bench and keeps the board from sliding
  • Perimeter juice channel, so a carved roast doesn't run onto the counter
  • Non-porous surface: no absorbed odours, no beetroot or turmeric stains, no grey knife grooves
  • Dishwasher safe, or scrub it with anything you like including bleach
  • Doubles as a cold surface for pastry and a landing mat for hot pans
  • Dry it before stacking — water trapped under the trim is the only thing that marks it
  • Expect to sharpen your knives more often than you would with a timber board; pair it with your wooden one rather than replacing it
