Is a cotton blanket the layer your bed is actually missing?

How do I keep it from coming out of the wash looking crumpled?

Cotton sets whatever shape it dries in — that is the entire care instruction, and everything else follows from it. Get it out of the machine promptly and give it one hard shake, and you will almost never need to iron a cotton blanket.

The step everyone skips is the shake. Thirty seconds of snapping the blanket straight before you hang it does more for how it looks than an hour with an iron, because you are setting the fibres flat before they dry rather than flattening them after.

Why woven cotton outlasts a pile blanket

Pile fabrics — fleece, sherpa, faux fur — age visibly, because what you are looking at is the condition of millions of fibre ends standing up off a backing. Once those flatten or mat, the blanket looks tired even though the fabric underneath is intact. Woven cotton has no pile to lose. The structure is the yarn itself, interlocked, so the surface you see on day one is essentially the surface you see three years later, minus a gentle softening as the fibres relax. That is why cotton blankets get handed down and fleece blankets get thrown out. The other practical difference is smell: cotton dries out completely between uses, so a blanket that lives on a sofa in a house with a dog does not slowly acquire the character of that dog the way a synthetic pile does.
