Four sizes — which one is mine?

The sizes here go from lap-sized to bed-sized, so the question is what the blanket is for before it is about who it is for. A raised stripe reads differently at each scale too: on the smallest it is a bold texture, on the largest it becomes a quiet ribbed field.

Will the raised stripes flatten out?

The stripes are formed in the pile, so they last as long as the pile does — and pile dies of heat. This is the one care rule that matters more than all the others put together.

Cool wash, low spin, air dry or tumble on the lowest setting. Then run a hand along the stripes against the grain while it is drying — that is the step everybody skips, and it is the difference between defined ridges and a vaguely bumpy blanket.

Most fleece blankets are flat. They are warm and they are fine, and they look like a large rectangle of nothing draped on your sofa. The Fluffy Stripes Sherpa Blanket has a raised stripe running through it, so there is something to see from across the room and something to run your hand along when you pick it up. It is a small thing that changes whether a blanket looks like furniture or like laundry.

Why a raised stripe is warmer than a flat one

The stripe is not printed and it is not woven in as a colour change — it is a difference in pile height. Rows of taller pile sit between rows of shorter pile, which gives the surface actual relief. That relief is doing insulating work: the channels between the ridges hold pockets of still air, and still air is what keeps heat in. A flat pile presses into one uniform layer under your body weight; a ridged one keeps some loft even where you are lying on it.

Backed with sherpa, you get a second layer of curled pile on the reverse. Sherpa side against you is the warm setting; striped side against you is cooler and gives you the texture. In practise most people use the striped face up on the sofa because that is the side worth looking at, and flip it when it gets properly cold.

The other advantage of relief: it hides use. Flat fleece shows every crease and every sat-on patch. Ridges carry their own shadow, so a blanket that has been lived on all evening still looks like itself.

Blush Stripes — soft warm pink. The gentlest of the five and the usual pick for a bedroom or a kid's room.
Ash Stripes — mid grey. The safe one; the stripes read as texture rather than as pattern, so it works in a room that already has a lot going on.
