What size do I need, and which Roman shade?

Size is the choice that matters — pick it off the job, not off the bed size. The five Roman colours are all muted neutrals, so whichever you land on will sit with what you already own.

Choose If this sounds like you
100 × 150 cm One person on the couch. Long enough to cover you from shoulders to feet without a heap of extra fabric on the floor.
150 × 200 cm The everyday throw. Covers two people sitting up, or one person fully spread out, and folds neatly over the arm of a sofa when it's not in use.
180 × 200 cm A top layer on a bed rather than a throw — wide enough that it doesn't slide off one side the moment someone turns over.
200 × 230 cm Two adults under one blanket, or a bed you want fully covered with overhang on both sides. The one to pick if sharing is the point.

When in doubt between two sizes, go up. Nobody has ever complained that a blanket was too big.

Will plush stay soft, or go matted and staticky?

Plush doesn't wear out — it gets ruined by heat and softener. Both of those flatten the fibre tips permanently, and once the pile mats there's no bringing it back. Everything else about looking after this is easy.

    Works for Avoid
Sofa and bed use, cold rooms, sleeping under, kids' rooms, anyone who runs cold in winter Hot washes, hot tumble drying, fabric softener, ironing, and washing it with towels — lint transfers straight into the pile

Wash cold on gentle, tumble on low or air dry. The step people skip: washing it on its own. Plush attracts lint like nothing else in the house, and one bath towel in the same load will leave fluff in it that takes three washes to shift.

The heating goes on an hour later than it used to.

There's a specific point in an evening where the room is fine but you're not — feet cold, arms cold, not cold enough to justify turning the heating up for one person. The whole reason a heavy plush blanket earns its place on the sofa is that it solves that moment without a thermostat argument, and it's the thing everyone in the house ends up fighting over by about nine.

Why the pile depth decides whether it's warm

Plush blankets don't generate heat, they trap air — and how much air they trap depends entirely on how deep and how dense the pile is. A thin, sparse plush feels soft in the shop and does almost nothing on a cold night, because there's no volume between the fibres. A deep pile holds a layer of warm air against you, which is why a plush blanket can feel warmer than a much heavier woven one.

The same depth is what gives it the drape. It has weight, so it stays where you put it instead of sliding off your knees every time you move, and it falls in soft folds over the arm of a sofa rather than sitting up in stiff creases. That combination — warm without being heavy, weighty enough to stay put — is the whole argument for buying plush over fleece.

The five Roman shades in a real room

    • Roman Coffee — deep warm brown. The most forgiving with pets and kids, and it reads rich rather than dark against cream or tan furniture.
    • Roman Khaki — a muted olive-tan. Sits with timber, leather and green plants, and it's the one that looks least like a blanket and most like part of the room.
    • Roman Beige — the safe neutral. Disappears onto a light sofa, which is exactly the point if you want warmth without adding another colour to the room.
    • Roman Dark Grey — charcoal. The one for a modern grey or black-and-white room, and the one that shows the least in a shared living space that gets constant use.
    • Roman Mist Blue — soft grey-blue, the only cool tone here. Best on a bed rather than a sofa, where it does the calm bedroom thing that browns and khakis can't.
