The moulded tray built into your shower holds two bottles if you angle them, so the conditioner lives on the floor, the razor balances on the tile ledge until it doesn't, and the soap ends up somewhere behind the shampoo. The Aluma Curve puts the whole lot on the wall at eye height. The shelf has a raised lip along the front edge, so nothing walks off when the door shuts, and the base is slotted so water leaves instead of collecting into that ring of grey sludge under the body wash.

Aluminium is the whole reason this lasts

Most cheap shower caddies fail the same way. Chrome-plated steel wire chips at a weld, water gets under the plating, and within a season there's a rust bloom running down your tile that no amount of scrubbing lifts. Plastic ones go yellow and brittle where the hot water hits them. Aluminium doesn't rust — it can't, there's no iron in it — so the shelf that comes out of the box is the shelf you still have after two years of daily steam. The body is a single formed piece rather than a lattice of welded wire, which means no joints to fail and nothing to catch hair. Edges are rolled rather than cut, so you're not going to scrape a knuckle reaching past it for the tap.

The two layouts, and the two finishes

• 1 Layer — a single curved shelf, roughly the footprint of a large paperback. Sits high enough to duck under, holds four or five standard bottles standing up. This is the one for a shower that currently has nothing on the wall and you'd like to keep the look restrained.
• 2 Layer — the same shelf twice, fixed one above the other with a gap tall enough for pump bottles. Top shelf takes the things you use every day, bottom shelf takes the face wash, the kids' stuff and whatever else has been on the floor for a month.
• Silver — brushed aluminium with a soft satin sheen, not a mirror chrome. Reads as part of the plumbing rather than as an accessory, which is exactly what you want in a shower that already has chrome fittings.
• Black — an even matte, closer to charcoal than to gloss black. Against white subway tile it draws a clean horizontal line; against dark tile it recedes almost completely.
