Which length do I need for my table?

Measure your tabletop, then add about 41 cm to the length — that gives you roughly 20 cm of drop at each end, which is the drop that looks right on a home dining table. Every size here is 140 cm wide, so the only decision is length.

140 × 180 cm	A four-seater rectangle — the standard flat or small-house dining table where two people sit down most nights and four squeeze in on Sundays.
140 × 200 cm	A six-seater. The most common dining table size in most homes, and the safest guess if you can't get to the tape measure right now.
140 × 220 cm	A generous six or a tight eight, or a six-seater where you want a longer, more formal drop at the ends.

If you're between two sizes, go longer. A cloth that hangs a little far is a look; one that stops short of the table edge is a mistake you see every time you sit down.

What happens the first time someone knocks over a glass?

Every fabric tablecloth is a race between you and the spill. Blot it in the first minute and you'll almost never see it again; leave it until the plates are cleared and you're negotiating with a stain.

Blot, don't rub. Cool machine wash, and if it creases from the fold, hang it damp over the back of two chairs rather than ironing it flat — the weight pulls the crease out on its own. The step people skip: tuck the tassels into the drum, or into a pillowcase, before washing. Loose tassels wrap themselves around the agitator and come out looking chewed.
