Which length do I need for my table?

Measure your tabletop, then add about 41 cm to the length — that gives you roughly 20 cm of drop at each end, which is the drop that looks right on a home dining table. Every size here is 140 cm wide, so the only decision is length.

Choose If this sounds like you
140 × 140 cm A square table, a round table that seats four, or a kitchen table shoved against the wall. Also the one people buy for a card table that comes out at Christmas.
140 × 180 cm A four-seater rectangle — the standard flat or small-house dining table where two people sit down most nights and four squeeze in on Sundays.
140 × 200 cm A six-seater. The most common dining table size in most homes, and the safest guess if you can't get to the tape measure right now.
140 × 220 cm A generous six or a tight eight, or a six-seater where you want a longer, more formal drop at the ends.
140 × 260 cm An eight-seater, or a six-seater with the extension leaf in for the months of the year when everyone comes over.
140 × 300 cm A ten-seater, a long farmhouse table, or a pair of trestles pushed together in the garden for a party.

If you're between two sizes, go longer. A cloth that hangs a little far is a look; one that stops short of the table edge is a mistake you see every time you sit down.

What happens the first time someone knocks over a glass?

Every fabric tablecloth is a race between you and the spill. Blot it in the first minute and you'll almost never see it again; leave it until the plates are cleared and you're negotiating with a stain.

    Works on Avoid
Dining tables, kitchen tables, sideboards and console tables, outdoor tables on a still day, buffet and dessert tables Sitting a hot dish straight on it — use a trivet. And don't leave the tassels hanging where a chair leg or a toddler can get hold of them.

Blot, don't rub. Cool machine wash, and if it creases from the fold, hang it damp over the back of two chairs rather than ironing it flat — the weight pulls the crease out on its own. The step people skip: tuck the tassels into the drum, or into a pillowcase, before washing. Loose tassels wrap themselves around the agitator and come out looking chewed.

The table stops being where the post gets dumped.

A bare dining table is a surface, and surfaces collect things: keys, opened envelopes, a laptop, the charger for something. Put a cloth on it and the psychology flips — it becomes a table you set rather than a shelf you pile. That's most of what a tablecloth does, and it does it on a random Wednesday just as much as at Christmas.

Blossom Spring Tassel Table Cloth floral print detail

The tassels are the part that decides whether it looks cheap

A plain hemmed rectangle of printed fabric looks like a plain hemmed rectangle of printed fabric. The tassel edge is what stops this reading as a picnic blanket: it gives the hem visible weight, so the cloth hangs with a defined line at the ends instead of fluttering. It also solves the practical problem that a flat hem never does — a weighted edge stays put when someone pulls their chair in, rather than dragging the whole cloth two inches sideways and taking the centrepiece with it.

The spring blossom print carries the same logic. It's a mid-scale floral, which is the scale that works on a table: large-scale prints get chopped up by plates and serving dishes, tiny prints turn into noise from standing height. At this scale the pattern still reads once the table is laid.

    How the sizes actually behave

    • 140 × 140 cm — square, and the only one that suits a round table cleanly. Corners fall as four soft points, which is the classic look.
    • 140 × 180 cm and 140 × 200 cm — the everyday sizes. Enough drop to look dressed, short enough that it isn't in anyone's lap.
    • 140 × 220 cm — the point where it starts to feel formal. A longer end drop reads more like a set table than a covered one.
    • 140 × 260 cm and 140 × 300 cm — party lengths. These are also the two people buy for a table they only extend a few times a year.

    What You're Getting

    • One Blossom Spring tablecloth in your chosen Size — all six are 140 cm wide, with lengths from 140 cm to 300 cm
    • Tasselled edge that weights the hem so it hangs straight and shifts less when chairs move
    • Mid-scale spring blossom print, sized to still read once plates and dishes are on the table
    • Six lengths covering a square four-seater through to a ten-seater or a pair of trestles
    • Works indoors or out on a still day, and doubles as a sideboard or buffet cover
    • Machine washable — cool wash, tassels tucked in or bagged
    • Creases drop out damp if you hang it rather than ironing it
    • Blot spills immediately and most of them never leave a mark
