Where is this blanket actually going to live?

One version, no options to weigh up — so the useful question is which room, or whether it leaves the house at all. Cotton is the one blanket material that doesn't punish you for taking it outside, and that changes what it's worth.

Right for you if Probably not if
You want a blanket you can throw on grass, take to a balcony or leave in the boot of the car without wincing. You're looking for maximum warmth in a cold house. This is a light cotton layer, not a thermal one.
The bedroom is white-on-white and needs one botanical thing to stop it reading as a spare room. You want something that stays perfectly flat and crease-free on a made bed. Cotton relaxes into folds.
You'd rather wash a blanket without a second thought than treat it as something delicate. You need a specific finished size for a specific bed — this comes in one, and it's a throw rather than a bedspread.

A lot of these end up as the car blanket that also happens to look good on the sofa.

Will it shrink in the first wash?

Cotton takes up a little on its first hot contact with water, and then stops — it's a one-time settle, not an ongoing shrink. How much depends almost entirely on the temperature you choose the first time.

    Do this Avoid
Wash cold the first time and every time. Cotton settles a fraction and then holds its dimensions indefinitely. A hot first wash. That's where the noticeable shrink happens, and it doesn't come back out.
Line dry, or pull it out of the dryer while it's still slightly damp and hang it. A full high-heat tumble cycle. Heat drying shrinks cotton harder than hot washing does.
Straighten the corners while it's damp so it dries square. Wringing it out hard. Twisting a woven cotton panel distorts the weave along the diagonal.

Grass stains and picnic marks come out with cold water and ordinary detergent, provided you don't put heat on them first. The step people skip: rinsing a mark cold before it goes anywhere near a warm wash. Heat sets a stain into cotton permanently, and after that no cycle is going to shift it.

The blanket you don't think twice about putting on the ground.

Most nice blankets have a quiet rule attached: not on the grass, not in the car, not where the dog sits. So the good one stays folded and looking decorative while an old fleece does all the actual work. A cotton blanket with a botanical print has no such rule. It goes from the end of the bed to a park lawn to the back seat and through a cold wash, and comes out looking exactly as it did — which is how a blanket ends up genuinely used rather than admired.

Woven cotton is the reason it survives being useful

The material decides the rules. A fleece or sherpa throw picks up grass seed, holds dog hair in the pile, and mats permanently the first time it gets hot-washed to clean off a picnic, so instinctively you keep it indoors. Woven cotton has no pile for anything to embed in — seeds and hair shake straight off a flat surface — and it tolerates repeated washing without changing its texture. That's the whole reason it can be treated casually.

The trade-off runs the other way in winter, and it's worth being straight about it: cotton doesn't trap heat the way a synthetic pile does, so it won't warm a cold room on its own. What it does instead is regulate. Under it you stay level rather than climbing towards uncomfortable, which is why a cotton blanket is the one that stays on the bed through a warm night, and why it works better than a fleece as a layer on top of a duvet in the cold. The botanical print holds up to all of this because it sits in a flat weave with nothing to crush or flatten.

    • Over the end of the bed — folded across the foot, where the leaf print gives an otherwise plain bedroom its only pattern.
    • On the sofa in summer — light enough to sit under on a warm evening without the trapped-heat feeling a fleece throw gives after ten minutes.
    • Outside — the lawn, a balcony, a picnic, a beach. Shakes clean, washes cold, and doesn't need to be babied afterwards.
    • In the car — the blanket that lives in the boot for cold spectator sports and unplanned stops, and still looks respectable indoors.
