Coverlets are meant to sit on top, not tuck in, so pick by how far you want it to hang. Measure your mattress width and add roughly a foot per side for a drop that reads intentional.

Cotton gauze is meant to crinkle — so how do I wash it without wrecking it?

Stop trying to iron it flat. The texture is the product. Gauze is a loose, airy weave that puckers as it dries, and every attempt to smooth it out permanently just flattens the loft that makes it breathe.

The step people skip: the hard shake before it dries. Thirty seconds of snapping it open sets the pucker evenly across the whole piece. Skip it and you get a coverlet that's crisp in some patches and bunched in others, and no amount of smoothing fixes it afterwards.

Gauze is cotton woven with deliberate space between the yarns rather than packed tight. That open structure is why it breathes: warm, damp air moves out through the fabric instead of being trapped against your skin the way it is under a tightly woven sheet. It's also why the fabric gets softer with age rather than thinner — the yarns have room to relax and bloom with every wash, so the second month is better than the first. The crinkled surface adds a second thing: because the fabric isn't lying flat against you, there's a fine layer of air between the coverlet and your skin, which is what stops it from feeling clammy on a humid night.
