Which colour works next to my basin?

A soap dispenser sits at eye level on a narrow surface, so it is either the quietest thing on the vanity or the loudest. Same ceramic body and the same pump in all three — the marbling tone is the whole choice.

What can I actually put in it?

Anything that pours and pumps — the limit is thickness, not what the liquid is for.

Hand soap, washing-up liquid, body wash, shampoo, conditioner and hand lotion — anything of a normal pourable consistency.	Thick scrubs with grit or beads, and anything you have not diluted from a solid concentrate. Both clog a pump, and a clogged pump is the end of the dispenser.

Refill through the top with the pump lifted out, filling to just below the neck so it doesn't overflow when the tube goes back in. Wipe the ceramic with a damp cloth. When you change product, flush warm water through the pump for ten seconds before the new soap goes in. That is the step people skip, and it is why a dispenser that lived on shampoo for a year then spits when you switch it to hand soap.

Ceramic is hard but it is not forgiving — set it down rather than dropping it onto a stone basin surround.

You can retile a bathroom, hang decent towels and put in the taps you actually wanted, and the whole room will still be undermined by a squat plastic bottle with a barcode on the back sitting next to the basin. The first is weight. A plastic dispenser walks. Every one-handed pump pushes it back an inch, so it drifts toward the tap, then into the tap, and eventually into the basin. Ceramic has enough mass to stay put under a pump, which means you can use it with wet hands and one thumb the way you actually use it. The second is what happens over months. Plastic goes cloudy where soap sits against it, and it scratches on a stone surround until the surface holds a permanent grey film. A glazed ceramic body wipes clean and stays looking the same in year two as in week one. The marbled finish here runs through the glaze rather than being a printed wrap, so there is no edge or seam to lift where water pools around the base — which is exactly where cheaper dispensers give themselves away.
