A kimono robe has no buttons and no fixed waist, so it forgives more than a fitted garment does. The size decision is really about how much overlap you want across the front when it's tied.

M	You take a medium in everything and you want the robe to follow you rather than billow — the version you'd answer the door in.
L	You want deep front overlap and room to pull your arms inside while you drink coffee. Also the size to take if you're between two.
