Which size, and how much drop do you want?

Five of the six sizes are 140 cm wide, so for most tables you are only picking a length. Measure your table, then add roughly 12 to 51 cm to the length for a drop at each end. With a lace edge you want that drop to be visible — a lace border that stops flat on the table top is a lace border nobody sees.

Choose	If this sounds like you
140 × 140 cm	A square kitchen table, or a round one where you want the corners to hang down in four points. The size people also use on a small side table by a window.
140 × 180 cm	The standard four-seater. If you have a normal dining table and you are not sure, start here.

Is lace too delicate for a table people actually eat at?

Lace is fine with food and fine with washing — what it does not tolerate is being snagged and being ironed hot. Nearly every ruined lace cloth was ruined by a wristwatch, a zip in the drum, or an iron set for cotton.

Practical version: wash it alone, cool and gentle, line dry, and press the plain fabric only. The skipped step is putting it inside a pillowcase or a mesh bag before it goes in the machine — thirty seconds of effort that removes the single most common way a lace cloth gets destroyed.

A solid cloth has to be matched to the room, because it replaces the table surface entirely. Lace does not replace it — it sits over it. The gaps in the pattern pick up whatever is underneath, so the same cloth reads warm over oak, cooler over grey-painted wood, and crisper over glass. That is unusual, and it is the reason a lace cloth tends to survive a house move and a redecoration when a plain one does not.

The blue floral does the other half. Lace on its own can tip into looking like a doily; a defined blue floral pattern gives the cloth structure and stops the whole thing reading as fussy white openwork. It also means the cloth has a clear front and centre, which makes laying the table straightforward — you line the pattern up with the table centre and everything else follows.
