There is a specific moment in winter where you get into bed, put your face on a cotton pillowcase, and immediately regret the whole evening. Why the pile depth is the whole product

Cheap fleece is thin fleece. It feels soft in the shop and then, after four washes, it goes slick and slightly plasticky — the fibres have matted into each other and there is no loft left to trap air. These are cut with enough pile to survive a wash cycle, and the seams are closed rather than raw-edged, which is where thin fleece usually gives out first.
