Does a fluffy blanket stay fluffy, or go flat and staticky?

The pile flattens for two reasons: heat and softener. Control those and it keeps its loft. A wearable blanket gets washed more often than a sofa throw, so how you wash it decides how it feels in six months.

Wash it by itself — a fluffy pile sheds a little on the first couple of cycles and will decorate everything else in the drum. The skipped step is shaking it out hard before it dries; that is what lifts the pile back up, and a blanket dried in a lump dries matted.

Why the cut matters more than the fluff

Any soft fabric feels good in a shop. What separates a wearable blanket that gets used daily from one that ends up in a drawer is whether it stays on your shoulders when you move. Too little fabric and it slips backwards every few minutes. Too much and you are dragging a rug around and standing on the hem.

The cloak shape is a middle position: enough drop at the back and sides to close around you when you sit, cut so the front stays open and your hands are free. That last part is the whole point. You can hold a mug, type, read, scroll, open the fridge — all the things a lap blanket makes into a two-stage operation.

The pile does the heat. A deep, brushed surface traps a layer of warm air against you, which is why it feels warm within seconds rather than needing to be warmed up first. It is also why the wash instructions matter: flatten the pile and you have flattened the insulation.
