Faux fur fails for one reason: heat. The pile is a synthetic fibre, and heat is what makes it clump and lose its lie. Keep the heat out and it stays soft for years; put it through a hot cycle once and you will not get it back.

Pile density decides whether it stays plush

Cheap faux fur is sparse pile on a thin backing. It looks fine folded in a shop and then splits into visible partings the first time somebody sits on it, because there are not enough fibres per square inch to stand each other up. Denser pile holds its own shape — press a hand into it and it comes back rather than staying dented. The backing matters just as much: a proper woven backing keeps the fibres anchored so they don't work loose at the edges, which is where shedding usually starts. That combination of dense pile and a stable backing is also why this drapes with weight instead of floating. It stays where you put it on the arm of a sofa rather than sliding off every twenty minutes.

Coffee — deep warm brown. The one that reads as expensive against a dark sofa and hides everyday marks best. Good in a room with leather or walnut.
Beige — mid sandy neutral. The middle ground: warmer than grey, more forgiving than ivory, and it works with almost any upholstery colour.
Ivory — soft off-white with no blue in it. The most dramatic of the three and the one that makes a room look styled. Best if it is going on a bed rather than on the sofa where the dog sits.
