All three sizes are 150 cm wide — so what am I actually choosing?

Length, and only length. The width stays the same across every option, so the decision is how far down it needs to reach: over your feet, over the end of the sofa, or across a bed.

Choose If this sounds like you
180 × 150 cm You want one blanket for one person in an armchair, and you don't want a pile of surplus fabric on the floor every time you stand up.
200 × 150 cm You are tall, or you lie full-length on the sofa and your feet always end up out in the cold.
220 × 150 cm You want it laid across the end of a bed as a proper layer, or draped over the back of a long sofa so it hangs rather than perches.

If two of you share the sofa, size up. Faux fur is not something people are generous about sharing.

Is it going to mat and go crunchy after a few washes?

Faux fur fails for one reason: heat. The pile is a synthetic fibre, and heat is what makes it clump and lose its lie. Keep the heat out and it stays soft for years; put it through a hot cycle once and you will not get it back.

    Works on Avoid
Cold gentle machine wash, on its own so the pile has room to move Hot water, hot tumble drying, and radiators
Flat or line drying away from direct heat Ironing — there is no safe setting for synthetic pile
Spot cleaning small spills with a damp cloth Fabric softener, which coats the fibres and flattens them

The step people skip: shake it out and brush the pile in one direction while it is still slightly damp. That is what restores the lie. Wait until it is bone dry and you are combing a mat.

The blanket everyone in the house fights over by November.

There is a specific kind of cold that a duvet does not fix — sitting still on a sofa at nine in the evening with the heating already off. A thin cotton throw does nothing about it. This one is dense pile on a backed weave, which means it holds warmth against you almost immediately rather than needing ten minutes to get going. The practical consequence is that you stop turning the heating back on for one hour of television.

Pile density decides whether it stays plush

Cheap faux fur is sparse pile on a thin backing. It looks fine folded in a shop and then splits into visible partings the first time somebody sits on it, because there are not enough fibres per square inch to stand each other up. Denser pile holds its own shape — press a hand into it and it comes back rather than staying dented. The backing matters just as much: a proper woven backing keeps the fibres anchored so they don't work loose at the edges, which is where shedding usually starts. That combination of dense pile and a stable backing is also why this drapes with weight instead of floating. It stays where you put it on the arm of a sofa rather than sliding off every twenty minutes.

    • Coffee — deep warm brown. The one that reads as expensive against a dark sofa and hides everyday marks best. Good in a room with leather or walnut.
    • Beige — mid sandy neutral. The middle ground: warmer than grey, more forgiving than ivory, and it works with almost any upholstery colour.
    • Ivory — soft off-white with no blue in it. The most dramatic of the three and the one that makes a room look styled. Best if it is going on a bed rather than on the sofa where the dog sits.
