What size do I need — and is this going on a bed or a sofa?

Answer that one question and the size picks itself. A blanket that's too small on a bed looks like a runner; a blanket that's too big on a sofa pools on the floor.

Choose If this sounds like you
150 × 200 cm This lives on the arm of the sofa and gets pulled over one person watching television. Also right for a single bed or a child's room.
180 × 220 cm A double bed where you want it to cover the sleeping surface and hang a little at the sides, or a sofa two people share.
200 × 230 cm A larger bed, or you want proper drop down both sides so nobody has to negotiate for the edge at 2am.

If you're torn, go up. Nobody has ever complained a blanket was slightly too generous.

Is cotton warm enough, or should I be buying wool?

Cotton is the right answer for a blanket you use all year rather than one you put away in April. It insulates without trapping heat the way a synthetic throw does, which is why you don't wake up under it sweating.

Good for Not the right pick if
People who run warm at night and can't sleep under fleece You want a single heavy layer for deep winter with nothing else on the bed
Layering over a duvet in autumn, then using alone through summer You want something that feels slick and cool to the touch — terry weave has texture
Anyone who wants a blanket that goes in a normal wash, not to a dry cleaner You need something a dog's claws won't catch — looped weaves snag

Wash warm on a gentle cycle and tumble low. The step people skip: give it a hard shake out of the machine before it dries. Terry cotton dries into whatever shape it lands in, and thirty seconds of shaking saves you a stiff, creased blanket.

One blanket that works in February and still works in July.

Most households own the wrong blanket twice. There's a fleece throw that's too hot by March and gets shoved in a cupboard, and a summer sheet that's useless the moment the heating goes off. So you're forever swapping, and the one you want is always the one in the loft. A terry cotton weave sits in between — substantial enough to be worth pulling over you in the cold, breathable enough that you don't kick it off at 3am in August. It stays on the bed all year, which is a smaller ambition than most blankets have and a much more useful one.

Why a terry weave behaves differently to a flat one

Flat-woven cotton is a single plane of thread. It's thin, it creases hard, and it has no air in it, so it gives you very little warmth for its weight. A terry weave pulls loops up out of the base cloth, and those loops hold air between them. That's where the insulation comes from — not from thickness, from structure. It also means the blanket gets softer with washing instead of thinner, because the loops relax and open up rather than compressing.

The floral motif here is woven into the cloth rather than printed on top of it, which matters over time. A print sits on the surface and eventually fades unevenly wherever the fabric gets the most friction. A woven pattern is the same colour all the way through the structure, so it ages at the same rate as the rest of the blanket.

    • Silver Bloom — cool pale grey with the floral in tone-on-tone. The most neutral of the five and the one that works on a bed with existing white or grey bedding.
    • Sage Bloom — muted green. Good in a bedroom with wood furniture or in a room where you already have plants doing the colour work.
    • Rose Bloom — dusty pink rather than bright. Warm under a lamp and soft in daylight, and the one people put on a guest bed.
    • Sky Bloom — pale blue. Cooler than the others and the best of the set folded across the end of a bed with white linen.
    • Beige Bloom — warm sand. The quietest option and the one that disappears most easily onto a sofa that already has a colour scheme.
