A robe is not a shirt: you want it to wrap and overlap, not to just meet. The difference between these three is how much fabric crosses over at the front and how far down your leg the hem lands. If you are hovering between two, the larger one gives you a deeper wrap and a longer hem, which is what most people actually want from a bathrobe.

M	You like a robe that stays close and out of the way — you wear it while you are doing things, not while you are lounging, and you dislike sleeves that swamp your hands.
L	The safe middle. You want a proper crossover at the chest and a hem below the knee, and you would rather have a little spare fabric than none.
XL	You want the full wrap-yourself-up version, or you are broad through the shoulders and have been let down before by a robe that pulled open every time you sat down.

Will the floral print survive being washed every week?

A printed robe lives or dies on how you wash it — the pattern is the first thing to go dull, and heat is what does it. Treat it like a printed garment rather than like a towel and it stays sharp.

Cold or cool gentle cycle, turned inside out, with like colours.	Hot washes, and anything with a bleach or brightener in it.
Low tumble or line dry in shade, hung by the shoulders.	Full sun drying, which fades the print unevenly along whichever side faced out.
Tying the belt loosely before washing.	Letting the loose belt whip around the drum and knot itself through a sleeve.

Turn it inside out, tie the belt, wash cool, dry out of direct sun. Drying in shade is the step people skip — a sunny balcony will lift the colour out of one shoulder in a single summer.

A robe you would answer the door in.

The standard bathrobe is a shapeless block of white towelling that makes you look like you are between treatments at a spa. This one is a printed floral, cut to hang rather than to bulk out, which means it does the job of a bathrobe — the morning coffee, the ten minutes after a bath, the hour before you can face getting dressed — without looking like hotel stock. Why the drape decides everything

Thick towelling robes stand away from the body. They are warm, but they add four inches to your outline and the belt disappears into a roll of fabric. A robe with drape does the opposite: it follows the line of your shoulders, the belt sits where a waist sits, and the hem swings when you walk. That is why an ornate print works here and would look absurd on a heavy waffle robe — there is a flat, moving surface for the pattern to live on.

It also means the robe folds down small. It goes on a hook behind a door without wedging the door open, and it packs flat into a weekend bag, which a bath-towel robe simply does not.

Choosing your size

M — the trimmest of the three. Neat sleeves, hem around the knee, crossover that holds without excess bulk at the front.
L — more overlap across the chest and a longer hem. The version most people picture when they think "bathrobe that fits properly".
XL — generous through the shoulders and body, with the deepest wrap. Choose it if you want to be able to fold your arms inside it.
