Is 89 × 160 cm the size I actually want?

There is one size here, and it is a big one — closer to a bath sheet than to the towel most people already own. A standard bath towel wraps and just about meets. At 89 cm wide and 160 cm long this one wraps and overlaps, and it still reaches the knee on most people. Why do towels stop absorbing after a few months?

Almost always the same culprit: fabric softener. Cotton pulls water in through its loops. Softener works by depositing a thin waxy coating over fibres to make them feel slippery — which is precisely the opposite of what you want on a towel. The towel still feels lovely and stops drying you.

The everyday bath towel is a compromise nobody agreed to. It is wide enough to wrap and not quite wide enough to tuck, so it drops off while you are cleaning your teeth. It dries your body or your hair, not both, so there is a second towel on the floor by the time you are done. And by mid-winter it has stopped drying anything much at all and just moves the water around. A larger cotton towel that has been kept absorbent fixes all three complaints at once, and it is a lower-effort upgrade than almost anything else in a bathroom.

Absorbency is a cotton property, not a marketing one

Cotton fibre is hollow and hygroscopic — it draws water into the fibre itself rather than only trapping it between threads. That is why a cotton towel keeps working when it is already half wet, and why a synthetic-blend towel feels great for the first ten seconds and then starts pushing water around your shoulders. Woven into a looped pile, cotton also gives you surface area: the loops are what let one pass down an arm take the water off instead of smearing it.

The honest trade-off is drying time. Cotton hangs onto moisture longer than a slick synthetic, which is exactly the same property that makes it work on your skin. Give it a rail with air around it and that trade disappears.
