How do I stop a patterned towel going flat and grey?

Towels are ruined by softener and by the first wash, in that order.

Do	Don't
Wash it on its own the first time, warm, before it ever touches your skin.	Throw it straight in with white sheets. A saturated print always gives up some colour on wash one.
Use detergent only, and slightly less than you think.	Fabric softener. It coats the fibres in a waxy film, and a towel that cannot absorb water is just a decorative rectangle.
Line dry, or tumble low and take it out slightly damp.	Over-drying on high heat, which makes the pile brittle and scratchy and dulls the print.

The bit everybody forgets: hang it spread out, not folded in three over a narrow rail. A towel folded on a rail dries from the outside in and the inner fold stays damp all day — that damp fold is where the musty smell comes from, not the towel itself.
