Pick by what the blanket has to cover, not by the bed it lives near. The narrow 35-inch widths are runners and single-person throws; the two wide sizes are the only ones that cover a bed properly.

Cotton knit and tassels — how do I not wreck it?

A knit stretches when it is wet and heavy, so the failure mode is always hanging, never washing. Get the drying right and this thing outlives most of your soft furnishings.

The step people skip: squaring the corners while it dries flat. A knit sets in whatever shape you leave it in, and a blanket dried crooked stays crooked.

A knit you can see the stitches in, in whichever length your room actually needs.

Most throws come in one size, and that size is wrong for at least half of the places you want to put one. Too short for the bed end so the tassels dangle awkwardly six inches from each edge. Too wide for the bench. Too small to wrap around a whole person on the sofa, which is the only reason anyone bought a blanket in the first place. Knit, not woven — and why that changes how it drapes

A woven blanket holds a flat plane. It sits on top of a sofa arm like a board and you have to fuss with it to make it fall right. A knit has give in both directions, so it follows the shape of whatever it lands on — the arm of a chair, the curve of a shoulder, the corner of a mattress — without you arranging it. That is why the folds in the photographs look soft rather than creased.

The chrysanthemum motif is worked into the knit structure itself rather than printed on the surface, which is the part that determines whether this ages well. Printed pattern sits on top of fibre and wears off it. Pattern built from the stitch cannot fade off, because there is nothing to fade off — the shape is the fabric. Same reason the tassels are a continuation of the edge rather than something attached to it afterwards.

89 × 89 cm and 89 × 150 cm — the accent sizes. Ottoman, chair back, side table, one pair of legs on a cold evening.
89 × 180 cm and 89 × 210 cm — bed-end runners. The 83-inch version is the one to pick if you want the tassels hanging past both edges of the mattress rather than stopping level with it.
