    Shell 1 or Shell 2?

The names don't tell you anything, so judge them from the photos above — both are the same 71 × 140 cm towel with a different shell jacquard. The more useful question is how many you're buying and what they're for.

Choose If this sounds like you
Two of the same The bathroom is on show — guests use it, or it's the one visible from the hallway. A matched pair on the rail is the whole difference between styled and assorted.
One of each Two people share a bathroom and one of you always grabs the wrong towel. Different prints end that argument permanently.
Just one You want to see how the jacquard holds up in your own bathroom before committing the whole rail to it. Sensible.

Zoom into the product photos before you pick — the two shell designs read quite differently up close.

Does a patterned towel dry you as well as a plain one?

It does when the pattern is woven in rather than printed on top. A printed pattern sits as a film across the surface and blocks the loops underneath; a jacquard is the weave itself, so the whole face still absorbs. What ruins absorbency here isn't the pattern — it's what you put in the wash.

    Do Avoid
Wash before first use so the finishing residue comes out Judging absorbency straight out of the packaging
Detergent only, warm wash Fabric softener, which coats cotton loops and repels water
Washing with other towels Washing with anything that has a zip or hook, which pulls jacquard loops

The step people skip: if a loop does get pulled, snip it flush rather than yanking it. Pulling a jacquard thread drags the shell pattern out of shape along the whole row.

A bathroom that looks finished, from one item on the rail.

Bathrooms are hard to decorate because there's nowhere to put anything. No shelf space, no soft furnishings, nothing on the walls but a mirror. Which means the towels are the decor, whether you intended that or not — and a rail of mismatched plain towels in three fading shades is doing active damage to a room you otherwise like. A patterned towel is the cheapest thing in the house that fixes an entire room.

Jacquard, and why it matters on a towel

Jacquard means the shell design is created by the weave structure — threads lifted and dropped to build the motif — rather than stamped onto a finished cloth. On a towel that distinction is unusually important. A print has to sit on top of the pile, which means either flattening the loops or sitting on a smooth low-pile panel; either way you lose absorbency exactly where the pattern is. A woven shell motif keeps cotton loop across the whole towel and gets its definition from light and shadow instead of ink. It also can't crack, peel or wash off, because there's nothing sitting on the surface to come away. The pattern lasts as long as the towel does.

    The two options

    • Shell 1 — the first of the two shell jacquards. Look at the product photos to see the motif and tone; the difference between the two is in the design itself, not in the towel underneath.
    • Shell 2 — the alternate shell jacquard, same 71 × 140 cm size and same cotton construction. Pick whichever motif suits the bathroom you're putting it in.
