Small, Single or King — which one for what I'm doing with it?

The checkerboard grid is the same scale in every size, so a smaller one doesn't look like a cropped version of a bigger one. Choose by where it's going to live.

Choose If this sounds like you
Small It's for one person in one chair, or for folding over the arm of the sofa where the pattern does most of its work as decoration.
Single You want to lie under it full length on the couch, or lay it across the foot of a bed as the layer you pull up at 3am.
King Two of you share it, or you want it to actually cover a bed and hang over the sides rather than sit on top like a strip.

A Small on a chair and a King on the bed in the same colour is a common way to run it through a room.

Does the checkerboard texture flatten out after a few washes?

The pattern here is raised — it's a texture you can feel, not a print — so it can't wash off. What it can do is get crushed, and that's a heat problem.

    Works well Avoid
Cold wash on a gentle cycle Hot water, which flattens the raised squares out of the surface
Air drying, or tumble with no heat Ironing it — there is no version of that which ends well
Washing it alone, especially the King Cramming it in with a full load, which stops it rinsing properly
Plain detergent Fabric softener, which weighs the pile down and dulls the texture

The step people skip: shake it out along both diagonals before folding it. The squares stand back up and the grid goes sharp again.

A blanket with a pattern you can feel, not one printed on and hoping.

The problem with most patterned throws is that the pattern is ink. It looks right in the photo, then goes slightly grey after the third wash and slightly cracked after the tenth. This one carries its design as structure — a grid of raised squares worked into the surface, so the checkerboard reads through shadow rather than colour. It means the pattern is still there in a dim room at night, and it's still there in two years.

Why raised squares beat a flat plush face

A flat plush blanket has one surface and one behaviour. Break that surface into a grid of raised and recessed squares and two things change. Visually, the blanket picks up light differently across its face, so it has depth even in a single colour — which is why it doesn't read as a cheap fleece throw when it's folded on the end of a bed. Practically, the recessed lines between the squares give the pile somewhere to move when you sit on it, so the blanket creases along the grid rather than crushing flat in a random patch.

The pile itself does the warmth. Raised fibres hold still air against you, and still air is the actual insulator — which is why this feels warm in under a minute without the dead weight of a heavy woven blanket. It's a blanket you can pull up while lying down without having to sit up to do it.

    • Avocado Green — muted and slightly grey. The grid shows most clearly on this one because the shadow contrast is strongest.
    • White — the version where the texture is the whole design. Best in a room that's already busy and can't take another colour.
    • Peach Pink — soft and warm rather than bright; the one that makes a plain grey couch look less like an office.
    • Grey — the neutral. Goes anywhere, hides everything, and the grid keeps it from looking flat.
    • Coffee — deep warm brown, the choice for rooms with timber and leather already in them.
    • Blue — the coolest tone of the six, and the easiest to live with in a room with a lot of white and glass.
    • Small, Single and King — the same grid and the same pile, scaled for a chair, a couch, or a bed with two people in it.
