Does the checkerboard texture flatten out after a few washes?

The pattern here is raised — it's a texture you can feel, not a print — so it can't wash off. What it can do is get crushed, and that's a heat problem.

The step people skip: shake it out along both diagonals before folding it. The squares stand back up and the grid goes sharp again.

The problem with most patterned throws is that the pattern is ink. It looks right in the photo, then goes slightly grey after the third wash and slightly cracked after the tenth. This one carries its design as structure — a grid of raised squares worked into the surface, so the checkerboard reads through shadow rather than colour. Why raised squares beat a flat plush face

A flat plush blanket has one surface and one behaviour. Break that surface into a grid of raised and recessed squares and two things change. Visually, the blanket picks up light differently across its face, so it has depth even in a single colour — which is why it doesn't read as a cheap fleece throw when it's folded on the end of a bed. Practically, the recessed lines between the squares give the pile somewhere to move when you sit on it, so the blanket creases along the grid rather than crushing flat in a random patch.
