Which size fits the space beside my sink?

Measure the clear run of counter next to the sink before you pick — that number decides it, not how much you wash up. A mat that overhangs the edge gets knocked and a mat that is too small sends water straight onto the counter.

Will it go smelly and sour like the last one?

Only if it never dries out. Every absorbent kitchen mat can go musty; the ones that do are the ones left flat and wet on a cold counter for a week. This one dries between uses and goes in the machine when it stops smelling of nothing.

Works on	Avoid
Sealed stone, quartz, laminate, stainless steel and sealed timber counters. Also fine on a shelf inside a cupboard, or under a drying rack.	Setting a hot pan straight out of the oven onto it, resting it against a lit burner, and leaving it soaked and folded overnight.

The routine: use it, then at the end of the night hang it over the oven rail, the tap, or the edge of the sink so air gets to both faces. Machine wash warm with your tea towels every week or two, tumble dry low or line dry.

The step people skip is skipping fabric softener. Softener coats microfibre and kills its ability to absorb — one wash with it and the mat starts pushing water around instead of taking it in. Detergent only.

You wash a roasting tray, stand it on the counter to drain, and twenty minutes later there is a slick of water spreading under the kettle and down the front of the cabinet door. You mop it with a tea towel, the tea towel is now soaked and useless, and by the weekend the cabinet edge is starting to swell where the water keeps sitting.

Why the pile does the work, not the thickness

A folded tea towel holds a surprising amount of water and then does nothing with it — it sits saturated and cold, wicking straight back into whatever is standing on it. That is why plates on a tea towel still feel damp an hour later.

This mat is built the other way around. The surface is a dense microfibre pile with a huge amount of fibre surface area, so water is drawn off dishes on contact and pulled down away from the top layer. Because the fibres are fine and lofted rather than packed flat, air moves through the pile and the water evaporates instead of pooling. The backing keeps the mat from sliding when you set a heavy wet pot on one corner, and the whole thing folds or rolls small enough to live in a drawer when the counter needs to be clear for cooking.

Picking a colour

Black — the most forgiving. Coffee splashes, turmeric, red wine and tea rings do not show between washes. Best in a kitchen with dark counters or black hardware.
Grey — the default for most kitchens. Neutral against stone or laminate, hides everyday marks without reading as a black rectangle on the counter.
White — cleanest look, highest maintenance. Pick this if your kitchen is white-on-white and you are happy to wash it weekly.
Blue — a soft cool tone that reads more like a linen tea towel than a utility mat. Works next to a white sink and pale cabinets.
Green — muted and warm, the one that suits timber counters and older kitchens where a grey mat looks too clinical.
