Cotton, and why the check is woven rather than printed

The checkerboard is built from the weave itself — alternating blocks of colour running through the cotton rather than a pattern sitting on the surface. This is the thing that decides whether the towel still looks good in a year. Printed towels lose their design at the fold lines and along the edge where they rub the rail. A woven check has nowhere to fade from, because there is no separate layer of ink to lose.

Cotton is also the reason the towel works at all. It gets softer with washing rather than pilling, and the blocky construction gives the surface a bit of texture, which is genuinely useful when you are drying your back and want something with grip rather than a slick sheet.
