Why the gauze weave is doing the work here

Cotton gauze is woven loose and left to crinkle. The open structure is the entire mechanism: air moves through the fabric rather than being trapped under it, so heat and moisture leave instead of building up against your skin. That is why gauze feels cool when a cotton sheet of similar weight feels sticky by 2am.

The crinkle has a practical side too. It means the coverlet never needs pressing, never looks rumpled because rumpled is the finish, and it gets noticeably softer over the first several washes as the weave loosens. A gauze coverlet two summers in is better than a new one, which is not true of much bedding.
