Velour is a cut pile, and the only thing that separates a good one from a bad one is how many fibres are standing up per square inch. A sparse pile lets you see the backing between the fibres, feels thin, and mats into shiny patches wherever a body sits regularly. A dense pile hides the base entirely, springs back after being sat on, and holds air — which is what makes a blanket feel warm without being heavy.

Density also decides how the blossom design reads. On a thin pile a pattern looks printed-on and slightly blurred at the edges. With enough depth the design has its own surface, catching light at a different angle to the ground colour, so the blossoms have a subtle relief to them rather than sitting flat. That is the difference you notice from a metre away without being able to name it.
