Which size goes on my table?

Two of these sizes aren't tablecloths at all — they're toppers. Measure your tabletop, then decide how much overhang you want the tassels to hang in.

61 × 61 cm or 89 × 89 cm	You're dressing a side table, a nightstand, or the top of a dresser — something under a lamp or a vase, where you want the tassels visible on all four edges.
135 × 135 cm	A square or small round dining table for two to four, or a card table you'd rather nobody recognised as a card table.
135 × 180 cm	The everyday rectangular kitchen table that seats four to six and gets used for homework as often as dinner.

What happens to the tassels in the wash?

Tassels are the first thing to go on a trimmed cloth, and almost always because of the machine, not the wear. They tangle, they wrap around the agitator, and they come out matted.

The step people skip: straightening the fringe while it's still damp. Do it then and it hangs properly; do it dry and you're picking at knots.

A tassel trim changes the reading entirely. It gives the drop some weight so the cloth hangs rather than lifting in a draught, it breaks the hard line where the fabric ends, and it catches shadow along the table edge in a way a flat hem never does.
