Which size, before you get to the colour?

Nobody has ever regretted going one size up on a sherpa blanket. The three sizes aren't the same blanket scaled — they're three different jobs. Pick the job first, then pick the colour, because the colour is the easy part.

Choose If this sounds like you
100 × 150 cm It's for one person in one chair — the reading corner, the office chair, the kid who wants their own and won't share it.
150 × 200 cm You're an adult lying full length on a sofa and you want your feet covered as well as your shoulders.
200 × 230 cm Two people under one blanket, or you want it to sit across a bed rather than perch at the foot of it.

The 150 × 200 cm is the one most households end up using every night, whatever they bought it for.

Does sherpa go flat and matted after a few washes?

It goes flat when it gets cooked, not when it gets washed. Heat is what melts the loops of a sherpa pile into a crust. Wash it cold and dry it slowly and the pile stays open, which is the whole reason you bought it.

    Works on Avoid
Cold gentle machine wash, washed by itself Hot water, which is what flattens and stiffens the sherpa side
Low or no heat drying, then shaking it out Fabric softener, which coats the pile and kills the loft it's meant to have
A lint roller over the embossed side between washes Ironing, and washing it alongside anything with a zip or hook

The step nearly everyone skips: shake it hard for ten seconds when it comes out of the dryer. Damp sherpa dries in whatever shape you leave it, and a shake is the difference between fluffy and pressed.

A blanket warm enough to actually stop you turning the heating up.

The usual evening: you're cold, the thermostat is across the room, and the throw you own is a thin decorative thing that stops at your knees. Solène is the other kind. Sherpa on one face, an embossed floral on the other, and enough weight that it stays where you put it instead of sliding onto the floor every time you shift position.

Solène Floral Embossed Sherpa Blanket embossed surface detail

Two faces, and why the embossing matters

The floral on this blanket is embossed rather than printed — the pattern is pressed into the pile so it sits as raised and recessed depth instead of ink lying on the surface. That's why it reads as texture from across the room and why it doesn't develop the faded, rubbed patches a printed fleece gets on the fold lines. Flip it and you get the sherpa face: the deep nubbly side that traps air and gets warm within about a minute of being over you. In practise most people run embossed-side-up when the blanket is on display and sherpa-side-in when they're under it.

    • Champagne Bloom — the warm neutral. Sits quietly on a cream or oatmeal sofa and doesn't fight anything already in the room. Pick it if you don't want the blanket to be the loudest object present.
    • Mint Whisper — a pale, cool green. Reads fresh rather than sweet, and works in a bedroom with white or pale wood where a warm tone would look heavy.
    • Terracotta Glow — the one with actual colour in it. Earthy clay tone that lifts a grey or charcoal sofa without introducing a pattern clash.
    • Powder Sky — soft washed blue. The safe choice for a shared living room where one person wanted neutral and the other wanted colour.
    • Mauve Haze — dusty pink-purple. Warmer than it sounds in daylight, and the one people choose for a bedroom rather than a lounge.
