Which size, and what am I using it for?

The four sizes here cover three different jobs — lap throw, sofa blanket, and bed layer — so start with the job. A throw bought for the couch and a throw bought for the bed are not the same purchase.

Choose If this sounds like you
110 × 110 cm A single-person lap blanket for the reading chair, a pram or bassinet cover, or something folded over an armchair back purely because the chair looks bare.
150 × 200 cm One adult properly covered on the sofa, feet included. The size most people mean when they say they want a throw.
180 × 220 cm Two people on the couch without the nightly territorial dispute, or a light bed layer on a Double.
200 × 230 cm Full bedspread duty on a Double or Queen, or your summer replacement for the duvet.

The 110 × 110 cm in a second colour is the usual add-on — it's the one that ends up in the car.

Will cotton waffle be warm enough, or too warm?

It sits deliberately in the middle — warmer than a sheet, much cooler than a duvet or a sherpa throw. That's the point of it, and it's why one blanket can work across most of the year instead of two months of it.

    Works for Avoid
Summer bedding, spring and autumn evenings on the sofa, warm sleepers year-round, and anyone who overheats under a duvet by midnight. Expecting it to replace a winter quilt on its own, and fabric softener — it coats cotton and closes up the waffle pockets.

Machine wash cold on gentle, tumble low or line dry in shade. The step people skip: pull it out of the dryer while it's still slightly damp and shake it hard. Waffle cotton comes out flat and creased and takes about four seconds of shaking to open the pockets back up.

One blanket that works in April, July and October.

Most households own the wrong number of blankets. There's a heavy winter one, there's a decorative one nobody is allowed to actually use, and then there's a nine-month gap in between where you either sit on the sofa slightly cold or drag the winter one out and cook. Waffle cotton is the layer that fills that gap. It's substantial enough that you feel covered and open enough that you don't overheat, which means it's the blanket that ends up permanently on the arm of the couch instead of in the linen cupboard.

Waffle is a structure, and the structure is what regulates temperature

A waffle weave is built by alternating long floating threads with tight binding points, which pulls the cloth into a grid of raised ridges and recessed square pockets. The pockets are not decoration. Each one is a small air chamber, and that's how a single thin layer of cotton manages to feel warmer than a flat sheet of the same weight — you're wrapped in trapped air, not in bulk.

The difference from a duvet is that these air pockets are open on one side. They hold enough still air to insulate, but body heat and moisture can move out of them rather than accumulating. That's the whole mechanism behind not waking up sweating. A duvet's loft is sealed inside a shell; a waffle's isn't.

Cotton finishes the job. The fibre takes up moisture instead of leaving it against your skin, and unlike synthetic throws it doesn't build static or start pilling on the arm of the sofa. It also does the thing cotton does over time, which is get softer with every wash rather than worse.

    The six colourways

    • Ocean Dream — A cool blue. Works in a bedroom with white linen and a lot of natural light, and it's the one that reads coolest in a warm room.
    • Pink Bloom — Soft warm pink. The gentlest of the six, and the usual pick for a nursery or a guest room that needs lifting.
    • Sage Whisper — Muted green. Sits well with timber, rattan and houseplants, and it's the least likely to date if you repaint.
    • Beige Glow — The warm neutral. Effectively invisible in a room full of cream and oak, which is exactly why people choose it.
    • Grey Mist — The cool neutral. For a monochrome or industrial room where beige would look out of place. Also the most forgiving between washes.
    • Blue Sky — Lighter and brighter than Ocean Dream. Pick this one if you want the blanket to be visible as a colour rather than blending into the sofa.
