M, L or XL — how should a robe fit?

A robe is the one garment where sizing up is almost never a mistake. You wear it over damp skin, over pyjamas, and while reaching for things — all situations where a close fit is the wrong fit.

Choose If this sounds like you
M You take a medium in most things and you want the robe to sit close rather than swim on you — straight out of the shower and into it, nothing worn underneath.
L You're between sizes, you'll be wearing it over pyjamas on a cold morning, or you just want the wrap-around depth that makes a robe feel like a robe.
XL You take an XL, or you want it deliberately oversized — the hotel-robe effect where it wraps well past the front and the sleeves sit long.

If you're deciding between two, take the larger one. Nobody has ever complained a robe was too roomy.

Waffle or thick towelling — which do I actually want?

Thick towelling is warmer for the first five minutes and worse for every minute after that. Waffle is the choice for people who wear a robe for an hour rather than for a dash down the hallway.

    Works for Avoid
Slow mornings with coffee, getting ready, after a bath, warm climates and heated houses, and travel — it packs down far smaller than a towelling robe. Using it as your entire winter layer in an unheated house, and fabric softener, which flattens the waffle and stops it absorbing.

Machine wash warm on gentle, tumble low or line dry. The step people skip: hang it on a hook by the shoulders after wearing, not folded over the back of a chair. A damp robe folded on itself is how a bathroom starts smelling.

The twenty minutes between shower and getting dressed stop being an ordeal.

The gap after a shower is badly handled in most houses. You stand there half-dry with a towel tucked under your arm that comes loose every time you reach for something, getting steadily colder while you find clean clothes. Or you put clothes onto skin that isn't quite dry and spend the next hour faintly clammy. A robe removes the whole problem — you're covered, you're warm, your hands are free, and you can take as long as you like about the rest of it.

Why waffle is the weave hotels use for the robe rather than the towel

Waffle cloth is woven so the surface forms a grid of raised ridges and recessed pockets. Compared with a thick looped towelling, it has far less material in it and far more exposed surface area — which changes two things that matter when you're wearing it rather than drying with it.

First, weight. A towelling robe soaks up water and then hangs on your shoulders as a heavy, sodden thing. Waffle takes moisture off your skin into the pockets and stays comparatively light, so it doesn't drag as the morning goes on. Second, drying. Those open pockets mean airflow through the cloth, so the robe you hang on the hook is dry again by evening instead of still faintly damp when you reach for it the next day.

The V-neck is part of the same logic. A high closed collar traps heat at the throat, which is fine for thirty seconds in a cold hallway and stifling for an hour with a coffee. An open V lets you sit in it comfortably in a heated house, which is where most robes are actually worn.

    The five colourways

    • Yellow — The cheerful one. Reads as sunlit in a bathroom with no window, and it's the colour people pick when they want the robe visible on the back of the door rather than blending in.
    • White — The hotel default. Sits with any bathroom, any towel set, any tile. The one to choose if you want the whole room to look like one deliberate scheme.
    • Green — Soft and grounded. Suits a bathroom with timber, plants or stone, and it's the least likely of the five to look tired after a few months of daily use.
    • Pink — Warm without being loud. Good in a cool grey bathroom that needs something to stop it feeling clinical.
    • Blue — The calm one. Works against white tile and chrome, and it's the safest pick if the robe is a gift and you don't know the room it's going into.
